Shape of an EDM track
Time runs left to right. The tall blocks at the back show energy, and the lanes in front show which instrument layers play in each section.
Intro
The track opens with a simple beat and pads. It is kept sparse so a DJ can blend it with the previous song.
Build-up
The kick drops out, a snare roll speeds up and a riser sweeps upward. Tension climbs until a brief silence.
The drop
Everything hits at once: full kick, heavy bass and the main hook. Notice that the bass appears only here.
Breakdown
The drums and bass vanish. Pads, vocals and a soft version of the hook give the listener a rest and build emotion.
Second build and drop
A bigger build with chopped vocals leads into the final drop, the highest energy point of the track.
Outro
Layers are stripped back to a beat, mirroring the intro, so the DJ can mix into the next track.
