Tokyo at a glance
Tokyo's highlights circle the Imperial Palace: traditional Asakusa and Ueno to the east, neon Shinjuku and Shibuya to the west, and the bay to the south.
Getting around
The green Yamanote Line loops around central Tokyo and stops near almost every sight here. A rechargeable Suica or Pasmo card covers all the trains.
The historic heart
Start at the Imperial Palace and its East Gardens, then walk past red-brick Tokyo Station to the elegant shops and food halls of Ginza.
Old Tokyo in the east
Visit Senso-ji in Asakusa, stroll Ueno Park and its museums, then cross the Sumida River to ride up Tokyo Skytree. Akihabara's arcades and anime shops are one stop away.
Neon west side
Shinjuku's skyscrapers and night life, the forest calm of Meiji Shrine next to trendy Harajuku, and the famous scramble at Shibuya Crossing.
Towers and the bay
See Tokyo Tower lit up, cross the Rainbow Bridge to Odaiba's art and Gundam, and get up early for sushi at Toyosu Market.
Beyond the city
With a spare day, head out to Mt Fuji and its lakes, about two hours by bus or train from Shinjuku.
